Friends,
I am a professor at one of the public universities in NJ, and I was born and raised in Zimbabwe. I am very passionate about issues related to access to education and sustainability in rural Zimbabwe. As an educator, I have access to a lot of unwanted, but useful, books (thousands at a time). I am focusing on Math, English, Science, Accounting, History, Social Studies and Literature. Every few years, I work with students at my university and other community members in my adopted town of Hammonton to collect books and send them to Zimbabwe (see more information about the project here: www.zimbabwebookproject.weebly.com . Our last shipment of 40,000 books and electronic equipment was a success. Thanks to your donations of close to $5,000 (and another $10,000 from fellow professors and staff members at Stockton University), we were able to ship those books and distribute them in Zimbabwe (see narrative and photos here: https://taitstockton.weebly.com/zimbabwe-book-project.html . Those books were distributed to more than 40 schools and two universities in Mashonaland Central, Manicaland and Masvingo.
We are back again! We have now collected close to 30,000 books (see some of the process here when I worked with Books Without Borders: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqiiNM4IGsA ). I am pretty sure we will reach our goal of 40,000 in the next few months, so we are setting a shipping date of May 2022.
It will cost us close to $20,000 to process, ship, collect and distribute those books (all volunteers work for free - this money goes towards shipping and port fees, mostly in South Africa). Here’s where I need your help. I live in a community of generous people (they donate thousands of books and money as well). The possibilities are endless in terms of the number of books and the number of schools we can help.
However, we need money to make all this happen. Will you be so kind to help with all these costs? Every little bit counts, even $1. If 20,000 people donated $1 each, we will be ready for our shipment. Of course, we are not discouraging big fat checks/cheques! The Zimbabwe Book Project is a registered non-profit organization, so these donations can be legally included in your tax filings!
Thank you in advance for your help!
Sincerely,
Tait Chirenje
BTW, if you are in the NJ, DE, PA, NY and CT area and would like to donate books please let me know.
